What is logotherapy?
Logotherapy is a term derived from “logo,” a Greek word that translates as meaning and therapy, which is defined as treatment of a condition, illness, or maladjustment. It was developed by Dr. Viktor Frankl and is founded on the belief that human nature is motivated by the search for a life purpose and humankind’s chief concern and source of energy is meaning.
Your title includes Organizational Logotherapist. What does that mean?
As an organizational logotherapist, I help companies create culture and conditions for people to experience vitalizing meaning and purpose which elevates their energy and wellbeing, increases creativity and engagement, and improves performance and retention. It’s kind of like ministering to the emotional/spiritual needs of people at work by equipping leaders to create nurturing workplaces where people can grow their skills and careers, enjoy a sense of belonging, and find their lives more harmoniously integrated with their work.
What is all this talk about companies needing to operate from purpose all about?
According to Deloitte’s research, and many other sources, purpose is “good for business.” Purpose-driven companies experience higher market share gains and grow three times faster than their competitors, while achieving higher workforce and customer satisfaction measures, which influences their higher retention rates. They deliver better long-term performance and are better equipped to attract, motivate and retain talent, especially among the youngest generations (Y and Z) who will comprise 75 percent of the global workforce by 2025.
Meaning is such an elusive, “soft” term. How do you make it operational in companies?
First, to operationalize means to implement measurable outcomes in an organization. To implement meaning is to create a culture where meaning is activated. That entails that leaders and managers learn a system of managing and supporting their workforce by supporting, appreciating, and growing them while ensuring they know they belong. This is the very system Dr. Alise teaches in her cultural transformation and leadership development programs.
You distinguish motivation from inspiration. What’s the difference?
Motivation is about pushing people to have to do something (by offering compensation or a punishment for not doing it), while inspiration pulls people to want to do something (usually by providing a compelling vision of a person or company’s future someone wishes to live into).
Why have you focused your career in human capital on the experience of work and how to improve it for individuals and companies?
Work has lost its noble place in life, to be replaced as it occurring as a bad four-letter word, something we have to endure to have the lifestyle we want. My mission is to help build a world where work is the nourishing playground that helps is realize our highest potential while allowing us to make the impact we crave to know we really matter.
