This Week on the Working on Purpose Playbook: Leading in Chaos for High Performance: Wisdom Straight from the C-Suite

Guest: Ken Banta | Book: Seeing Around Corners: C-Suite Wisdom from America’s Most Insightful Leaders

“I think strategy is somewhat overrated. The world is changing so quickly that having a three-year strategy is sometimes meaningless. Having a sense of purpose, of where you’re going with your organization, and then being very agile about how you get there, and especially making sure that the people in the organization understand what that purpose is—that can help you get there. And your people need to feel emotionally connected to that. To me, that’s really the job of CEOs today.” — Ken Banta

When Ken Banta joined me on Working on Purpose, we talked about how real leaders navigate volatility.
Ken has led eleven corporate reinventions and now heads The Vanguard Network, where executives trade candid lessons about transformation. His book gathers the wisdom of leaders who’ve been tested by chaos and learned how to turn it into clarity.

Our takeaway: strategy still matters—but purpose and agility matter more.

Leadership and Feedback

“The further up you go, the harder it is to stay connected to reality,” Ken said. “Tough feedback is a leader’s oxygen mask.”

Jeff Nemetz echoed that call:

“If there was ever a moment to ask, ‘Why are we doing this?’—this is it.”

And David Rock reminds us that giving people unexpected control over their work doesn’t create disorder; it builds trust. Autonomy, Ken added, is “the pressure valve of performance.”

Great leadership begins with listening, humility, and the courage to let others lead beside you.

Purpose and Culture

Dr. Jeremy Levin draws the line clearly:

“Mission defines what you do. Purpose explains why you do it.”

Ken and I agreed: purpose must be ethical and operationalized—woven into systems, not slogans. When it’s real, it fuels innovation and resilience.

Culture, he said, is “contagious behavior.” Tal Zaks, former CMO at Moderna, put it even simpler:

“The person at the top sets the tone.”

Leaders don’t dictate culture; they demonstrate it.

Innovation

“Innovation begins where rigidity ends,” Ken told me.

He rejects the myth of the corner-office strategist with a perfect plan. “Strategy matters,” he said, “but when it becomes a cage, it kills adaptability.”

For Ken, innovation is less invention than awareness—the discipline of staying alive to possibility. It’s the courage to keep listening when the plan insists it’s already right.

Balance and Empowerment

Nigel Jones warns against treating profit and well-being as opposites:

“They’re parallel and synergistic. Ignore one, you lose both.”

James Harrington modeled balance by leaving work to coach his sons’ soccer games. His team took that as permission to do the same.

Ken smiled. “If you send emails at midnight, people think they have to reply. Schedule them for morning—and tell them why.”

He closed with empowerment: “People need to feel their work has value. That’s what makes them want to come back tomorrow.”
Or as Craig Tooman advises, when dialogue stalls, “Switch chairs. You be me, I’ll be you.” Perspective restores progress.

Bringing It Full Circle

As we wrapped, Ken said something that lingered:

“Everyone is a leader in different ways—especially those on the front lines. They’re the ones who make things happen.”

In that one line, he reframed leadership not as hierarchy but as humanity in motion—people taking responsibility for what’s right in front of them and choosing to elevate it.

Purpose anchors us.
Autonomy frees us.
Culture carries us.
And meaning turns chaos into contribution.

At Gusto Now!, we call that leading with ignition—where clarity meets courage and performance becomes profoundly personal.

Because when people feel their work matters, they stop just showing up.
They start showing who they are.
